How to write a stronger CV with AI, step by step

Updated October 2026 · 6 min read

AI can save hours on a CV, but only if you feed it real facts. Used badly, it produces the same vague text every recruiter has already seen. Here is a process that keeps your CV honest and specific.

Step 1: Gather your facts first

Before opening any AI tool, list each job with dates, what you were responsible for, and any numbers you can prove: sales growth, time saved, team size, customers served. AI cannot invent these for you, and it should not.

Step 2: Paste the job advert and your facts

Give the tool both, then ask it to match. A prompt like this works with any major AI assistant:

Here is a job advert and my work history. Rewrite my experience as 3 to 4 bullet points per role, using only the facts I gave. Start each bullet with an action verb and keep the results I mentioned. Do not add any skills or numbers I did not provide.

Step 3: Tighten the summary

Write a 3-sentence professional summary for this CV aimed at the job above. Plain language, no buzzwords like "passionate" or "results-driven".

Step 4: Check every line yourself

Read each bullet and ask: is this true, and could I explain it in an interview? Delete anything that sounds impressive but isn't you. Recruiters notice generic phrasing quickly.

Step 5: Fix formatting and keywords

Keep one column, standard headings (Experience, Education, Skills) and a simple font so applicant tracking systems can read it. Make sure the main skills named in the advert appear in your CV where they are true.

Tip: always proofread the final version. AI tools can make mistakes, so verify names, dates and spelling before you send anything.

Common mistakes

Copying the AI output without editing, claiming skills you don't have, using the same CV for every job, and leaving in placeholder text. Spend ten minutes tailoring each application.
